Are you someone who is so scared of going to the dentist that you will absolutely avoid going, even to the detriment of your own dental hygiene?

If the answer is yes, the chances are you have a dental phobia. A phobia is more severe and intense than a fear which happens when the body senses danger and activates the fight or flight responses caused by a surge in adrenalin.

The fear or phobia may occur as a reaction to the dentist, the treatments or in more serious cases, anything dental related (such as toothpaste adverts). Fears and phobias usually occur because they have been learned from someone significant in our lives, or because there has been a significant negative usually directly related to a dentist experience.

If hypnosis has not already been explored, it could prove to be a useful skill in both managing the phobic response and alleviating any pain or discomfort. Unfortunately no one can really say how hypnosis works; however, research seems to suggest that it is based upon a disassociation model, as seen in patients with MPD.

Dissociation can eliminate pain by placing it in a sort of psychological storage area, away from the consciousness of the patient. There are many accounts in history of hypnosis being used in place of anesthetics.

Hypnosis is also a deeply relaxing state. This can be beneficial during the dental treatment, to keep the patient calm and relaxed and to have them focus in their minds, on a more pleasant experience whilst the dental work takes place. Remaining calm has other benefits as well as helping the patient to feel better. For instance, there may be less bleeding (if the dental work lends itself to the possibility of this occurring) and healing may occur more readily.

Hypnosis can also be used as a way of making unconscious changes. The unconscious is the greater part of our minds which is responsible for maintaining habits and behaviors, and using will power alone is not usually the easiest way of creating changes to this part of the mind. However, during hypnosis, it has been found that habits and behaviors can be changed easily. This means that suggestions for feeling calm and at ease or generally reacting in a more positive way to the dental experience can be given. Therefore, hypnosis can be used prior to the dental work and during the dental work.

The benefits of overcoming a dental phobia expand beyond better dental care and hygiene. It is thought that around 20% of those in the western world who have dental fears and phobias, also suffer from fears and anxieties in other areas of their

lives. When success has been achieved in one area, it is likely to have a positive impact on other areas of life where the patient once had challenges, and even of this does not occur, it will demonstrate that it is likely that the patient can achieve success using this method of therapeutic intervention. For those who are parents and suffering from a dental phobia, there is also an increased likelihood that your children will also develop some level of fear of going to the dentist, particularly if they have witnessed you becoming anxious about going to the dentist. The steps for a dental implant:

–Three weeks later, your missing tooth is replaced with the crown and your treatment is complete.

So what does all of that mean? The implant post is placed in the bone and the gum tissue and bone heal around it, (it is essentially the root of the tooth). The abutment is the attachment that is placed on top of the implant post. The crown is made and cemented to the abutment. Your missing tooth is now replaced by a natural feeling and a natural looking dental implant and crown.

Dental braces, also referred to as orthodontic braces, are an appliance that are used to correct dental irregularities such as straightening crooked teeth, aligning both the jaws, relieving pressure on the temporomandibular joints, and also improving the aesthetics of the face and smile.

When are Dental Braces Fitted?

Braces for the teeth can be fitted at any age, although ideally the procedure is carried out in children, and is less common in adults. The reason being that the jaw bones as well as the bone surrounding the teeth are much more malleable in children, and therefore respond better to the molding process of the braces. Whereas as far as adults are concerned, surgery is usually required to alter the jaw bones. Hence it is advisable that orthodontic procedures be done as early as possible, soon after teeth alignment problems are detected in a child.

Although there is no particular age when braces for the teeth can be fitted, but it is advisable to wait until there are enough adult teeth. As far as children are concerned, apart from creating well-aligned and straight teeth, the aim of fitting dental braces and orthodontic treatment is also used for improving the facial structure, the effects of which will be retained for the rest of their lives. However, in adults, orthodontic treatments are far more complicated. Those adults who do choose to opt for the treatment need to be aware that it entails wearing a retainer at night if they want to maintain the effects of the treatment for the rest of their lives. A retainer is a dental appliance that holds the teeth in position subsequent to an orthodontic treatment.

What is the Procedure for Fitting Dental Braces?

Dental braces are fitted by an orthodontist or a dentist. First a complete dental examination is carried out, then X-rays taken, after which plaster moulds of the teeth are made. Sometimes teeth may have to be extracted, if there is crowding of teeth, before the braces can be fitted. Although, these days it is the trend not to extract permanent teeth as far as possible. When the crowding is minor, removable or fixed appliances are used to expand the jaws. The dental braces are made according to the plaster moulds, with each bracket being fitted on each tooth. These brackets are kept aligned with the help of small wires, which are hooked between each of the brackets.

Various Types of Braces for the Teeth

There are a number of dental braces that are used according to various age groups. For example, there are dental

braces that are meant just for infants, which are used for treating congenital abnormalities like cleft palates. There are other types that are used on milk teeth, or when there are both milk as well as permanent teeth. Then there are the dental braces that are meant to be used for fully permanent teeth. A few orthopedic devices are used to realign the growth of the jaw bone.

Some of the various types of dental braces available are:

Stainless steel or silver braces, which are the most common, then there are braces with stainless steel brackets as well as archwires that have various colored ties around the brackets. There are also braces that have brackets and archwires made of real gold, which are worn by people who are allergic to stainless steel, although they are also worn to make a statement about using braces as a type of jewelry on teeth. Then there are braces that have white or transparent brackets, sometimes with even the archwires being transparent, making the braces almost undetectable.
