5 Ways to Prevent Tooth Decay

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Tooth Decay is a location on a tooth where so much of the tooth’s mineral content has been dissolved away that a defect of “cavity” has formed. Any surface of the tooth that is exposed to oral cavity can experience tooth decay but not the structures within the bone. Tooth decay is a disease that all people have to avoid. Here are five ways to prevent such:

– Fluoride Therapy. It is the delivery of fluoride to the teeth topically or systemically in order to prevent tooth decay (dental caries) which results in cavities. Intake of tablets or drops is usually done for flouride supplementation. Tablets or drops are rarely used where public water supplies are fluoridated.

– Brushing your teeth. Any Cincinnati dentist would say that the most important part of tooth care happens at home. Regular dental checkups and daily brushing and flossing are required to keep teeth healthy. Dentists say that brushing thrice a day is optimal in keeping teeth healthy and strong.

– Regular checkups with your dentist. Seeking professional advise is the most important step in dental health. After studying for years, nobody is more knowledgeable about teeth than dentists. You have nothing to worry about if you’d let them handle your dental problems.

– Dental sealant. It is the dental treatment consists of plastic material that covers one or more teeth, for preventing of cavities and tooth decay. They are usually applied during a visit to the dental clinic.

– Dietary snacks. It is a good idea to limit sweet snacks as excessive use of sweets alters your blood sugar. Completely avoiding snacks is a no-no since you’ll be depriving yourself of nutrition for that period. Good snacks should include healthy proteins and fats.

People often see a person’s teeth especially for those who smile easily so it is best to take care of them. Displaying the best white smile, we have to admit, can be one of our greatest features. It is very important to seek these guidelines if we want to maintain the best smile in our face.

Surprise, You Need a Special Dental Treatment Today!

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

One day I was informed by my hygienist that I needed a Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) treatment. Since that fateful day when I declined treatment and looked for my own solution, I have written a book and have learned a great deal about stopping the progression of gum disease and preventing it from coming back.

The unfortunate reality is that many people have this problem and do not realize it. One day, a tooth or multiple teeth may become loose and that is how many people discover the disease. Often the dentist will want to pull teeth and install implants or dentures.

As a patient and consumer I was left very dissatisfied with two important factors. One, the dentist let this problem progress without giving me any viable way of stopping it. Two, she waited until things got out of hand to tell me I needed this ’special’ treatment.

I certainly do NOT suggest that you reject your dentist’s treatment plan. I am merely stating that was a personal choice that I made – and it paid off. However, everyone’s situation is different and you need to seriously consider your doctor’s plan and if you are not happy, go get a second or even third opinion.

A little known fact (with consumers that is) is that you can go to three different dentists and get three very different opinions about what needs to be done. This is a fact that practicing dentists are aware of. However, I have never had a dentist tell me this – I found out for myself. Since then, I discovered that this phenomenon has actually been studied and documented.

The use of the hydrofloss may be helpful for those who do not respond to brushing and flossing (which is the majority of people). These simple techniques are what we have always been taught about prevention since we were children. However, if they really worked, up to 80% of the population would not be suffering from this dental disease, would they?

Oxygenated, pH balanced, Therabreath mouthwash may be helpful as well.

Finally, essential oils, like oramd oramd can help. However, you must still focus on the daily disruption of plaque.

Therefore, do not fall in to the trap of believing that you are a victim of poor dental hygiene. That could be the case for some people. But, again, brushing and flossing are not enough to prevent problems in the majority of people. Do not blame yourself too terribly, you are not alone.

All of this means that you should take the time to educate yourself about dental health and what works beyond the basics that everyone already knows about stopping gum disease and other dental problems.

Is Bleaching the Best Method of Home Teeth Whitening?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Teeth whitening is more than a fad, it's a multi-billion-dollar industry that will see more than 10 millions Americans spend over (an estimated) billion this year. Teeth whitening is by far the most common cosmetic service provided by dentists right across America , and the sales growth in mail-order and over-the-counter products has surged on a massive scale. But are brilliant white teeth really achievable? Is teeth whitening safe? Does it hurt? What is the best method? Can you do it at home? These are all very common questions, and in general you will find the answers to be: Yes, Yes, Not normally, (arguably) Bleaching, Yes. Whiter teeth can be achieved via a number of different methods, both at your dentist (or professional teeth whitening office) and at home. In fact, many dentists actually perform the first one or two treatments, then get you all kitted-up so you can do the rest at home. but that’s for the ‘bleaching’ methods, there are other avenues you can travel down in your quest for whiter teeth that involve structural changes to your teeth, like ‘bonding’ and ‘porcelain veneers’.

Bleach-based teeth whitening products all basically have the same goal – to penetrate deep into your tooth enamel to rid it of stains. Tooth enamel is porous, so brushing and scouring products don’t work, and this is where bleach-based tooth whitening products come into play. You see the most effective methods actually use bleaching chemicals to penetrate deep into the tooth enamel. They set off an oxidising process that breaks down the staining compounds in the enamel leaving you with bright white teeth. Sounds simple, but there are many products on the market that fall short of promises. Most over-the-counter products only ever manage to whiten teeth marginally, while the more professional products can provide you with extreme changes to the whiteness of your teeth. The entry-level teeth whitening product would be a whitening toothpaste. Some people have demonstrated a slight improvement in brightness, but because a toothpaste isn’t exposed to your teeth for very long (you only brush for a few minutes), they typically are not able to penetrate deep enough to have much effect.

Whitening Strips are thin, flexible pieces of plastic that have been coated on one side with a thin film of hydrogen-peroxide bleach (normally 6-10% strength). They are pressed against the top and lower teeth and normally need to be worn for 30 mins (twice daily) for 7-14 days. They do work, but because they cannot get into all the nooks and crannies and gaps between teeth, the results can sometimes be blotchy and less desirable than anticipated. Getting more serious, we have bleach-based tooth whitening products which will involve a tray being placed in your mouth that has been injected with a ‘bleaching’ solution (hydrogen peroxide). This procedure can be done at home or by your dentist, or by a combination of dentist / at home. You can buy cheap over-the-counter 'boil and bite' trays that are virtually ready to use out of the packet. You boil the tray to get it hot and mouldable, place it in your mouth and bite into it.

Parental Advisory: Dental Awareness About Children’s Teeth

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Parents are always mindful when it comes to their children’s health. From simple colds, fever, wound infections, and a lot more. They even monitor how many teeth are already coming out. As the child reaches toddler stage, parents set dental care awareness because children are likely prone to tooth decay if  they do not practice proper oral hygiene.

We are all familiar with how temporary teeth start in children. Actually, we all do.  However, it does not mean it is less important just because it’s temporary. Other than helping them chew their food easily, temporary teeth hold a valid reason on why they stay where they are.  They save the space or area for the permanent teeth.

Once the baby tooth is lost at an earlier stage – either to decay or accident – there is a tendency for the teeth beside it to drift to one side and create an empty space. When this occurs, there might not be enough space for the permanent teeth to occupy. This will result to crooked or crowded teeth which needs to be re-aligned in the future using braces. However, braces do not appeal to everyone because of the discomfort of wearing them.

With children’s tooth decay, sometimes infection occurs from decayed baby teeth that may harm the permanent teeth developing underneath. Cavities may not result to immediate pain but sometimes your kids might be hurting at some point without you knowing it. You need to pay attention on how your kids are feeling whenever they say something related to their teeth.Remember that untreated dental cavity tends to get worse and may reach a level of severity where root canal or tooth extraction will be the solution to the dental problem.

The above dental scenarios are quite common to parents, which is why there are preventive measures designed by dental specialists to address these issues. To avoid unwanted dental pain in the future, parents just need to implement these measures properly or monitor the children’s dental habits and hygiene.
